Spanning several bodies of work, Between Memory & Becoming traces the ways identity is formed through memory, cultural inheritance, kinship, and transformation. Across portraiture, fashion, and carefully constructed tableaux, Oyè Diran creates images that move between the personal and the symbolic, drawing on family histories, Yoruba culture, color, gesture, and the dynamics of community.
The presentation brings together works from Rêve Bleu, A Ti De, In Between Bonds, and Diran’s newest series, The Weight and the Wings. In Rêve Bleu, color becomes an emotional and spiritual language; A Ti De looks to vintage Yoruba fashion and the photographs Diran encountered in his own family archive; and In Between Bonds considers the tension between individuality and collective identity through kinship and community. His newest photographs extend these concerns into the intergenerational relationship between mother and daughter, reflecting on tenderness, endurance, protection, and the possibility of becoming.
